I just got a new book that I'm totally stoked about! Rob Bell is one of my favorite pastors. I listen to his sermons on-line all the time. I've visited his church, Mars Hill, in Grand Rapids, MI. So, I'm hoping that this book, "Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith," will be as good as his preaching. I really need a good book after the fiasco with the "Buck Naked Faith" book.

What was your fiasco with Buck Naked Faith?
Okay, I guess my "fiasco" (which, I must say, I appreciate your use of this wonderful word), with "Buck Naked Faith" would be that I was utterly disappointed with the book. I purchased the book for two reasons...1. The title was extremely intriguing. 2. The comments on the back of the books further spurred my interest. Leonard Sweet says about the book, "Finally, someone not only willing to speak up to the church -'The Emperor has no clothes!'- but someone offering robes of righteousness to all who come." There's also a note that says, "Take off your designer, postmodern phoniness. Strip off your prett-sounding words. Get your faith naked." I was totally expecting something ground-breaking...something truly new...something that would shake me up a bit...maybe even slap me in th eface. However, it did none of this. The book didn't really tackle anything new. The whole comment about "postmodern phoniness" totally got me excited, as I've been growing tired of the whole whiny attitude of the postmodern/emergent movement...though I appreciate their zeal for making changes. The book seemed like it may as well have been written by Rick Warren, as it gave these little steps of how to get "real" with our faith. So, I was disappointed because I felt like the book should have pushed some boundaries. But, instead, it barely moved from center.
